Dateline June 13th at Madison Square, New York, New York: The freshest young phenom in boxing, WBA featherweight champ Nicholas “Axeman” Walters, 25-0, 21 KO, defends against Colombian slugger Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga, 20-0, 18 KO, in an explosive grudge match after a long ago still simmering amateur rivalry.
Marriaga dashed Walters’ Olympic hopes with a 14-9 amateur decision way back when in 2008. He’s been fighting professionally in Columbia and Mexico, but he did wander into the very tough and experienced Christopher Martin’s California backyard to knock him out in the 6th round. Noteworthy is that Marriaga has 13 knockouts in three rounds or less.
Both of these guys are exceptionally big and strong at the weight, but overall Walters has been fighting at a higher professional level than Marriaga, so the question is whether Marriaga can step up to the next level? Then we have to ask who can take the best shot as I doubt we’ll see much Fancy Dan tippy-tap-tapping and moving.
Axe Man Cometh
Let’s hope they can make weight one more time before moving up to the more dynamic 130lb division where it will be healthier making weight than having to boil off every single ounce of what is becoming increasingly dangerous going into tough fights. Good luck all.
